In daily life, accidents can happen at any time, threatening our lives. Whether at home, the workplace, or in public spaces, having first aid skills is essential for everyone. First aid is not a remote professional skill but a practical life skill everyone should possess. This article discusses the importance of first aid training and shares how learning CPR, using Automated External Defibrillators (AED), and basic wound dressing can change lives.

The Importance of First Aid Skills

First aid can save lives in critical moments. Studies show around 70% of people suffering sudden cardiac arrest or respiratory failure die before professional medical help arrives due to lack of timely first aid. Therefore, spreading first aid knowledge is crucial. Every person trained in first aid is a protector of life.

In Hong Kong, the demand for first aid training continues to rise. With faster-paced lifestyles, accident rates are increasing. In 2019, police recorded approximately 35,000 accidents, including heart attacks, drowning, and various injuries. Having first aid skills helps us stay calm and act quickly in emergencies.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

CPR is a fundamental first aid technique. When the heart stops, chest compressions and rescue breaths maintain blood circulation. Learning CPR not only saves lives but also buys valuable time for professional medical teams to arrive.

Training courses teach correct CPR procedures, equipping participants to respond promptly and effectively in emergencies.

Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

AEDs are portable devices that restore normal heart rhythm via electrical shocks during cardiac arrest. The use of an AED is straightforward and can be learnt by anyone in first aid training.

More public locations in Hong Kong now have AEDs installed. If someone suddenly collapses, trained individuals can quickly and confidently operate the AED following its prompts. Recent data shows AED usage can improve survival rates to over 70%, highlighting the importance of learning this skill.

Wound Dressing and Bleeding Control

Basic skills in stopping bleeding and dressing wounds are vital in first aid training. Prompt bleeding control reduces blood loss and life-threatening risks. Participants learn to use gauze, bandages, and tourniquets properly.

These skills boost confidence and enable calm, correct responses in emergencies. Hands-on drills help trainees practice real-life scenarios for quick and effective action.
